Nicotrol Gum Programme

For Nicotrol gum to successfully help you to quit smoking, it needs to be used as part of a systematic programme of treatment. One obvious benefit of Nicotrol gum is that it is one of the most competitively priced brands of NRT gum on the market. Some people look at how much setting up such a programme will cost and complain that it is too expensive but when they do this they are missing the big picture. You have to put the cost into perspective. If you stop smoking, you will never have to buy another cigarette ever again. Up until now, you have probably treated cigarettes as a necessity, putting that money aside every week without really thinking about it, but no one "needs" to smoke.

Work out how much you spend on cigarettes in a day or even a week. Now project how much you would save over a month, a year, or a number of years if you did not have to spend that money on cigarettes. This is not to mention the severe health costs of smoking, on both you and your family, or the increased risk of life threatening diseases such as lung cancer or emphysema. The costs of medical care can reach astronomical heights if you become seriously ill from smoking and smokers pay higher premiums than non-smokers for life insurance. The cost of a 12-week programme of Nicotrol gum is nothing compared to this vast outlay of money on a smoking habit that can kill you, both financially and literally.

The 12-week treatment programme using Nicotrol gum is designed to give you adequate time to overcome the symptoms of nicotine withdrawal. It also helps ensure that the levels of nicotine in your bloodstream are sufficiently maintained to lessen the severity of withdrawal. By doing this, Nicotrol gum increases the chance that you will avoid a relapse into smoking once you quit. This does not mean that you cannot use Nicotrol gum for a longer period than this. Some people find that they need longer than 12-weeks to triumph over their nicotine cravings. This is because it is possible for the symptoms of nicotine withdrawal to endure for months after a person has stopped smoking.

As with other types of NRT, Nicotrol makes a small amount of nicotine available to the body to satisfy its craving for nicotine. The body, however, does not derive the same satisfaction from this nicotine as it does from the nicotine contained in a cigarette. This is because the nicotine in Nicotrol gum is released into the bloodstream considerably slower than a cigarette and it is not absorbed as readily. With a cigarette, the process that carries nicotine to the brain only takes a matter of seconds, which is why smokers experience more of a "rush" when they smoke than they get from the gum. This, and the gradual reduction in the amount of gum used, makes it easier to stop using the gum than it was to stop smoking.

The basic idea behind the Nicotrol treatment programme is that you take a piece of Nicotrol gum whenever you feel the urge to smoke. This gives the programme a considerable amount of flexibility and allows it to be customised to your needs. You can use the gum to target particular times of the day, certain social situations or environments if these were specific triggers for your desire to smoke. As long as you do not exceed the daily dose of 24 pieces of gum a day then you can take as much gum as you require to alleviate the symptoms of nicotine withdrawal. Someone using Nicotrol gum could typically expect to use between eight and twelve pieces of gum a day.

The first few weeks after you stop smoking are often the hardest ones in terms of nicotine withdrawal. This is why this is the period of the programme when you use the most gum. During the first six weeks of the treatment programme this may mean that you would take one piece of gum perhaps every one to two hours to combat your cigarette cravings. In the next three weeks, this amount may be reduced to one piece of gum every four to eight hours. Eventually, the last three weeks of the programme might see the amount of gum used reduced to only one piece every four to eight hours. After twelve weeks, you have hopefully reduced the amount of gum you are using to only one or two pieces a day. At this point, you can start to think about not having to use the gum at all. Of course, it may take longer than this before you are confident that you can stop using the gum without relapsing into smoking.

While the ideal is to stop smoking, Nicotrol gum does provide a means for those who cannot, or simply will not, stop smoking to reduce the amount that they smoke. With an ever-increasing number of public places that have banned smoking, Nicotrol gum gives you the opportunity to endure such a forced abstinence from smoking. The gum can be taken on a temporary basis in situations where you are not allowed to smoke, such as before surgery or on an airplane.
